How to: Change Safari’s start page on the iPhone

Unlike Safari for the PC/Mac, Safari on the iPhone does not let you specify a start page when you open the browser. However, we’ve come up with a work around that more or less performs the same function.

Step 1: Open up the page you’d like to make your start page in Safari (we’ll assume for this exercise you want theiphonecheatsheet.com – and why wouldn’t you?!).

Step 2: Hit the little “+” symbol at the bottom of the page to bring up the Add to Bookmarks screen.

Step 3: Select the “Add to Home Screen” button. This will now add a “WebClip” icon for that web page to your home screen.

Step 4: Now you can launch Safari by hitting that icon instead of the regular Safari icon, and you will always be greeted by your new “start page”. If you’d like to hide the regular Safari icon to reduce screen clutter, you can do so by rearranging your iPhone’s icons. I moved our new theiphonecheatsheet.com icon down the the dock, and pushed Safari back to the last icon on the last page of apps, effectively banishing it to Siberia. (Oh, and to rearrange the icons, simply press and hold one of them until the icons begin to “wiggle”. You can then drag them around the screen, and to multiple pages. Hit the round “Home” button on your iPhone to commit to the changes and stop the wiggling madness).
